Clinics and Services
Asthma and COPD
The nursing team at Westbury-on-Trym Primary Care Centre are able to help you manage your asthma or COPD.
You will be routinely invited for an annual check-up during your birthday month with reviews being done more frequently if you are having difficulty controlling your symptoms. The nurses will review and change treatment as required in consultation with your doctor. They also provide experienced advice on inhaler technique and self-management. If you still smoke, we can refer you to the smoking cessation service which offers appointments within the surgery. We are also able to refer you to the pulmonary rehabilitation service who provide excellent advice on appropriate exercise, diet and living well with your condition.
If you have COPD and have not seen our nurses in the clinic, then please make an appointment.
If you are an adult with Asthma which you feel is well-controlled, you will be offered the option to complete a self-assessment questionnaire, which our nurse can review first.

Cervical Screenings
Women aged between 25 and 64 should have a cervical screening every 3 to 5 years to help prevent cervical cancer. The screening is quick and painless and can be done here in the practice.
If you are aged over 25 and have never had a smear test, or if it has been more than 3 to 5 years since your last screening, you should arrange an appointment with our Practice Nurse. You should not have the test while you are having a period or in the 4 days before or after your period as this can affect the sample.
Contraception and Sexual Health
The Practice offers a full range of contraceptive options, sexual health screening tests and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.
All patients are also welcome to review the local services available via the Yuno Sexual Health Clinic website.
See our Sexual Health page for support details or Learn more about different methods of contraception, and the best time for appointments
Dermatology
The Practice provides a full range of minor surgery procedures.
Accredited GPs provide excision of skin lesions. We offer an enhanced minor surgery service via GP Care Ltd, and these surgeries are carried out by either Dr Koupparis, Dr Shufflebotham or Dr Jenkins.
Diabetes
If you are diabetic, we offer an appointment with our Diabetic Nurses, Clare Brice Taylor and Annette Thomas, at least once a year.
This review is an opportunity to discuss your health, medication and well-being and to think about changes that you can make to improve it. A care plan will be agreed as part of your appointment.
As well as the variety of health information that you find on our website regarding tips for healthy living, we recommend that you visit the Well Aware Bristol website.

NHS Health Check
The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74. It is designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk.

If you are eligible for a health check and received an invite, we need certain information from you.
Midwife Services
We offer a consulting room to the Midwifery service, which is run by North Bristol Trust.
Our midwife is typically based in the practice on a Monday and Thursday, working with our pregnant patients, usually numbering around 100 at any one time. The midwives also see patients here at the surgery that live locally but are registered at other GP practices.
We do not have access to the appointment book for the midwives; they can be accessed at their base (at Southmead) on 0117 4146924.
The midwife coordinates your care for the pregnancy, including offering you screening blood tests and ultrasound scans. The GP and/or obstetrician will also be involved if you have any medical conditions which may affect your pregnancy. During your pregnancy you should continue to contact us in the normal way about any general heath concerns. We ask that you make it clear to our Care Navigators that you are pregnant.
It is recommended to take vitamin D and folic acid supplements during pregnancy. Vitamin D is recommended throughout breastfeeding also, at a dose of 10mcg per day, it can be bought over the counter. Folic acid is recommended when trying to conceive until 12 weeks of pregnancy, at a dose of 400mcg per day (available over the counter) unless you have diabetes epilepsy or your BMI is over 30, in which case a prescription dose of 5mg per day is recommended.
A common area of concern is the use of medications in pregnancy.
